Collins and Lorente draw in Scotland; Dzambekov and Glanton score wins
A quick rundown of some of the boxing action from the past week
Nathaniel Collins fell short in his bid for the European featherweight title, boxing to a split draw in Glasgow with retaining champion Cristobal Lorente.
I thought the draw was fair enough and saw varying opinions online, with some favouring Collins’ work and others feeling Lorente had closed it out. The Spaniard certainly came on strong in the championship rounds like the champion he is.
Further down that card, Louie O’Doherty became the British lightweight champion by travelling into Regan Glackin’s backyard and forcing a 10th-round stoppage. A breakout display from the Essex man who was a long way from home.
Aston Brown reaffirmed his position as a dangerous puncher, putting away Paul Kean in round two.
Willy Hutchinson was too athletic and hit too hard for Mark Jeffers, stopping the Chorley man in seven. Hutchinson is an engaging character and wants a rematch with Joshua Buatsi next.
Over in Chumash Casino, Santa Ynez, on Friday evening, two Russian-born punchers clashed on the route to world level at light-heavyweight. Umar Dzambekov needed just two rounds to find his range and land a thudding left hand on Artem Brusov, who was floored and counted out at the close of the round.
Before all of this, on Wednesday evening in Nigeria, Amir Khan’s ‘Chaos in the Ring’ promotion delivered just that across a long evening of action.
In the main event, rugged puncher Brandon Glanton had too much firepower for New York southpaw Marcus Browne, who decided he’d had enough after six rounds.
Browne, who once rumbled with the likes of Artur Beterbiev, showed the early footwork flashes of old before crumbling and bailing out.
