On this day 19 years ago, Michael Katsidis and Graham Earl engaged in a memorable Wembley boxing battle.
The evening started badly for Earl, who was dropped twice in the opening round. Things didn’t get much better as he was floored again in round two.
With their man under increasingly heavy pressure, Earl’s corner threw the towel in. Referee Mickey Vann threw it back out of the ring! The veteran referee felt Earl was still in the contest.
Vann was proven right just moments later as the Luton man landed a thumping return right hand that had Katsidis wobbling on his back legs, receiving a count of his own.
Aussie Katsidis recovered to resume the beating, but had to wait until the close of round five to seal his victory. Earl was eventually retired by his corner team, with no complaint from Mr Vann this time.
